If you’re like most car owners, you probably don’t think about your power steering belt very often. But if it snaps or wears out, you’ll quickly realize how important it is! This article explains what a power steering belt does, what problems can occur if it’s not maintained properly, and why a power steering belt needs replacement. Keep reading to learn more.

What is a Power Steering Belt?

Let’s begin by explaining what a power steering belt is. You know it already that a power steering is used in modern vehicles to make steering the wheel easier for a driver. This power steering is connected to a belt that’s made of some flexible material. One side of the belt is flat while the other is grooving.

Cars manufactured before 1990 can have multiple belts for different car components. However, modern cars have only one belt, called the serpentine belt. This belt is connected to the power steering system, alternator, and the air conditioning system.

Why is a Power Steering Belt Important?

If the belt is broken or worn out, the power steering will stop working. So, the driver will have to manually turn the wheel which requires more energy. It can sometimes lead to dangerous situations. Ideally, you should get your power steering belt inspected by an expert mechanic every 6 months or 6000 miles.

When does a Car’s Power Steering Belt Need Replacement?

It is advisable to get your car’s power steering system and belts regularly checked during routine servicing so that the problem is identified at the right time. Your car will need a power steering belt replacement if the belt is broken or damaged. Other indicators can be hearing a loud screeching noise while starting the car or the power steering isn’t working properly. If you find the belt worn down during inspection, it should be replaced.

How is the Replacement Done?

When you bring your car to our expert mechanics, they will inspect everything thoroughly and they will replace the power steering belt if it needs replacement. Alternatively, they might loosen or tighten the belt based on its condition. The replacement will take place in the following manner

  1. The mechanic will remove the serpentine belt to access the power steering belt
  2. He/she will loosen the power steering pivot and adjuster bolts and push down the pump to remove the power steering belt
  3. Then they will install the new belt on the pump, pull up the pump and tighten the pivot and adjuster bolts
  4. They will reinstall the serpentine belt and check the pulley alignment
  5. They will start the car and check if everything is working fine.

Wrapping up

Your car’s power steering belt will need a replacement if it’s broken or worn down. Sometimes, the belt becomes slack and that causes faster wearing. In any case, you should get the belt checked during your routine car service. If your car’s power steering isn’t functioning properly, bring it to Swezo, our expert mechanics can help you.
