If the differential output seal breaks, it can cause the gears and bearings to overheat and stop working, making your car nonoperational. To avoid this, you will need differential output seal replacement. Let’s understand what it is and how it is done.

What is a Differential Output Seal?

It’s a well-known fact that the engine generates power that moves your vehicle. This power generated by your vehicle’s engine travels through the crankshaft to the transmission in a straight line. However, it needs to move 180 degrees to travel to the wheels. And the differential is that component of the vehicle that makes this transfer of power possible. It changes the direction of the force to power the wheels and creates the fixed gear ratio change.

The differential consists of a pinion gear and side gears that rotate inside a fluid to transfer power 180 degrees from the differential to each wheel. Different axle shafts connect the differential with each wheel. The differential output seal is meant to contain the oil inside the differential.

Why do you need Differential Output Seal Replacement?

The differential output seal makes sure that the internal gears of a differential remain lubricated. If the seal wears off or breaks, it will cause the fluid to leak which might eventually leave the car nonoperational. It’s important to note that in most cars, there’s no dipstick to check the fluid level in a differential. So, it’s not possible to know exactly how much fluid is present inside the differential.

While a small leak is harmless, if it continues for a long time, that could cause problems like overheating of the internal gears and bearings, To avoid such a situation, you should get the differential output seal replaced when you notice a leak.

When Should you Replace the Differential Output Seal?

The differential fluid should be replaced around every 30,000 miles. And during this servicing, you should also get the differential output seal inspected. Alternatively, if you notice the differential fluid leaking under the vehicle or hear a loud grinding noise while driving, you should get the differential output seal checked and replaced, if necessary.

How is it Done?

The mechanic will check the differential output seal and if the seal is broken or worn off, it would be replaced in the following manner.

  • Lift the vehicle on a jack stand
  • Remove the CX axle
  • Use a seal removal tool to remove the defective differential output seal
  • Install the new differential output seal and reinstall the CX axle
  • Refill the differential and test for leaks
  • Remove the car from the jack stand and road test it

Final Words

The differential output seal needs replacement if it breaks or wears off. It should be inspected during differential fluid change. And if you notice the differential fluid leaking, get it checked. You can post a request on Swezo to find a qualified mechanic near you.
