CV shaft or Constant Velocity Shaft consists of two velocity joints at each end, one connects to the gearbox and the other to the wheel hub. Each CV joint is covered by an accordion-shaped rubber sole that traps grease and prevents dirt and water from escaping. Due to use, the environment and normal wear and tear, these boots may tear. This will usually cause a popping sound coming from the front of the vehicle when turning. And if you face such a situation, you will need CV axle/shaft assembly replacement. Let’s find out more below.

What is a CV Axle/Shaft Assembly and Where is it Located?

A CV Axle is present in all front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles. A vehicle has an engine and transmission that can’t be moved up and down by the suspension. However, the wheels and the suspension move up and down to absorb the bumps and steer the front of the car.

The CV shaft is a shaft that connects the gearbox and the wheel hub. Two couplings allow the shaft to continue rotating as the suspension moves up and down while you drive. A Front-Wheel-Driving vehicle will have one shaft at the passenger side and the driver’s side. On the other hand, an All-Wheel-Driving Vehicle consists of two more shafts in the rear of the vehicle.

Why should you Replace the Shaft Assembly?

It’s not unsafe to drive with a torn shaft assembly in the short term.  However, the more you delay the repairs, the more you run the risk damaging the CV. The CV shaft is the only thing that transfers power from your engine to the wheels. So, it is quite critical in keeping you on the road.  And as such, you should not delay CV axle/shaft assembly replacement once you identify the problem.

When do you need CV Axle/ Shaft Assembly Replacement?

There is no set time to replace a CV shaft. CV shafts wear out over time and will eventually need replacement. You should get the shaft inspected during regular maintenance to ensure the boots are not torn and the shaft doesn’t need replacement. Some of the common symptoms of a torn CV axle/shaft are:

  • You hear a clicking sound when turning when driving from the front of the vehicle
  • You notice a lot of thick black axle grease on the inside of your wheels or the ground around your car
  • Vibration at highway speed

How is CV Axle/Shaft Assembly Replacement Done?

The mechanic will:

  • Check if the wheel hub needs to be replaced.
  • Remove the wheel and replace the defective axle.
  • Torque all screws and wheels according to factory specifications.
  • Refill any lost transmission fluid
  • Check tyre pressure
  • Test drive to ensure proper operation

Final Words

Your vehicle has multiple axles, but in most cases, only one axle would need replacement.  Even if the CV coupling or boot is the only part of the axle that fails, it is generally recommended to replace the entire axle.  Get a top-rated mechanic on Swezo for CV axle/shaft assembly replacement.
